Day 5 – Dust and Burning and Rain

Thursday, September 3, 2026

More hard-blowing dust during the day, gusting to 4 mph, and we could attest. The wind let up in the evening, finally, so we headed out to watch a rescheduled art burn. Many had been rescheduled from yesterday due to the high winds; the one we watched burn, a small one called Cellubrate, was moved from Friday to today.

We scootered out to mid-playa and watched the little art install burn.

Why burn stuff? It’s a long tradition at Burning Man. Not just the Man, but many installations (usually in the range of 5-15) have scheduled, monitored burns. They’re built to burn, it’s cordoned off with volunteer burn monitors present, and folks wander over to watch the pretty flames.

So adorable!

Now burn!

Note the firefighter in their gear. Every burn is heavily monitored. There was even an ambulance nearby, mostly in case someone tried to jump into the flames and stay there. This has happened at Burning Man.

It was raining a tiny bit when we left the burn. We circled back home via center camp again. We watched a deliberately janky “magic” show where volunteers were “beheaded”.

Robespierre?
Ubiquitous center camp flags, visible for quite a ways

We headed back home when it was really trying to rain, and got back before everything turned to mud.

River tried heading out on a scooter, but there was just enough mud to stop that. So she headed out on her bike for a bit. I went to bed.
