Friday, August 28th, 2026 – Suburb of Seattle, WA
I haven’t tracked a Burning Man week on this site before, as this domain is mainly for tracking the art car itself. But I have a couple of interested readers who’d like to know, so here we go. A grand experiment in blogging / journalling / whatever.
Friday, August 28, the planned first travel day, already wasn’t starting off well. I discovered the night before that the power steering unit (aka steering box, aka steering gear) on the RV (converted from a mini bus) was leaking. Well, it’s not a BM year without at least one major mechanical issue, especially on the 21-year-old rig. I asked River to buy a new one before she came over. It took most of the day and a lot of cursing scratching of head but I replaced it.

We finally got on the road in the evening. A stop for food, a stop for last-minute groceries, and we were on our way.

Our destination was a mid-way point in Oregon. It’s what we usually do, a day to drive to a KOA or RV campground, then push on the next day and into the night.
We stopped, finally, very early on Saturday at a campground in Eugene. Everyone was asleep. Our reserved spot was… taken. Ouch. Our name was on the post at the spot, the camp ground had a big sign saying it was full, but someone swiped our empty position anyway. I took pictures and dashed off some frustrated texts to the host, who I’m sure was still asleep, and we parked in the empty tent parking area near the registration hut.
