Day 9 – Exodus

Monday, September 7, 2026

Time to head out. Leaving Burning Man is called Exodus, and it’s the reverse of arriving. Take any lane on the way out, all which gradually reduces down to a single lane intersecting the paved highway. The road meanders on the playa for 6 miles. In years past, we’ve had to wait as the staff broke up Exodus into groups. This year, we started driving at about 8:30 AM, and drove practically non-stop right to the highway. There was very little traffic.

After leaving the playa, it was time to retrace our steps. Back up into the rough high desert of Nevada, cross over into California and its smoother roads. We stopped for corn dogs at the service station in Cedarville (the one that was closed when we came in).

Quite the collection of mutant vehicles at the gas station in Cedarville

We drove in to Kalamath Falls and to the same Love’s truck stop where we’d fueled up at the week before. We filled up again (took a couple of tries; the RV is a thirsty beast and the pump stopped at $200), and drove up highway 97, then 58, and made our way back to Armitage Campground outside of Eugene. This time our site was ready for us.

We took showers! Sweet, sweet running water. How nice. I also ran a load of laundry as I was out of almost everything. I cooked some camp food, and we headed to bed.
